Hello World!

It seems as if I've been hiding away from the world for the past couple months. It wasn't my intention, but it just happens sometimes. When life gets crazy, I have to cut back. I have to simplify. So I've been fairly absent from friends and the Internet and blogs and inspiration and art, etc.. But it's all been worthwhile:

My family and I are moving. Where you ask? Just 22.8 miles from our current home. This seemingly small move is going to mean big things for me and my family. This move is going to give us the gift of time. Less time driving and more time living. Hooray!

So for a couple of months now, we've been consumed with all things house related. We searched for the "perfect" house for our family, our budget, and desired location. We held our breath as we bid on the "perfect" home only to suffer heartbreak when we lost the "perfect" home just days before signing documents and days before Thanksgiving. We didn't let the heartbreak stop us, and we have already ended up in an even better home for our family, a home meant for us. So we celebrated the holidays with friends and family while surrounded by towers of moving boxes and paint buckets and rollers, etc..

We are not through with the painting and moving, etc., but today I've started peeking my head back into the world. I've started reaching out to old friends, visiting favorite blogs, checking out online classes for the new year, and looking out into the world. And I must say it's been inspiring! Here's just some of the fun stuff I'm exploring:

Cathy Zielske's BPS class, Move More, Eat Well 2012 (I could use some extra motivation to get back on track)

2012 Disneyland Half Marathon Weekend (I'm hoping for a 5K rather than a half marathon, but a Disney run could be worth the extra miles....maybe)

And do you remember the globe I made for my hubby's 40th birthday last February (pictured above)? Well not only has it been seen on TipJunkie and Babble. Now I learned that it was included in a list of DIY gifts to make for men on Tori Spelling's website, ediTORIal. How cool! How fun! Happy 2012!

12 words for 2012

Happy 2012! Its the beginning of a new year. A time for reflection and fresh starts.

For the past several years rather than set resolutions that I don't keep, I've chosen a word to set the tone for the new year. But this year I am going to tackle the year a bit differently. Instead of focusing on one word, I am going to focus on a list of my top ~~ten~~ twelve values.

I put this list together with the help of Tiffany Moore, life coach extraordinaire, and I can't even tell you how powerful this list has been. It may look fairly simple, but it's given me a strong sense of "me." It's helped me when making decisions both big and small. I feel so much more grounded and organized having a list that reminds me of what makes me tick.

Now don't get me wrong, my one little words have been quite powerful, too, especially last year's word, clear. My word last year took me on a powerful journey filled with self discovery. It led me to a better understanding of myself and it led me to some big life changes. But it also led me to my experience with Tiffany and my list of values. I just can't ignore that.

As I tried to pick one word for 2012, I thought of words like action or mindful or intention. But then I realized that they all truly revolve around my focusing on my list of values as a whole. So I'm going to breakout of the "one word" for 2012 and focus on 12 words: 12 words that represent me.

I know I'm getting ahead of myself, but I can't help it. I love Christmas time! Life may be crazy as usual, but it's never too busy for me to find time for Christmas inspired art and crafts.

Everyday should be celebrated!

Do you ever feel like you're trying to do too much? Or maybe I should rephrase and ask if you ever feel like you're NOT trying to do too much? Are you also plagued by unrealistic expectations? Like the belief that you can do everything.

Well that is what I'm dealing with. There's constantly a zillion things on my to do list and I'm always overly optimistic with the amount of things I can get done in a day. So after even the most productive of days, instead of celebrating what I've accomplished that day, I'm always left looking at the list of things I didn't get to.

And you know what? I need to stop that. I need to set my expectations aside and acknowledge all that I do accomplish. I should be celebrating my victories, no matter how small. Like folding the laundry AND putting it away. Or getting everyone to school and work on time. Or making a home cooked meal that my family loves.

These are the little things that make up everyday and everyday should be celebrated!

A personal reminder

Right now I feel like I'm barreling down the highway of life in a speedy red sports car. And the road I'm following isn't just straight. The road has some curves and I'm having to take some turns at top speeds. But you know what? I am in control. It might not always feel like it, but I am. I'm in the driver's seat, I'm making choices, and I'm going places. Too often in the past I've been content to sit in the passenger seat and just let life happen. And sometimes that's the right thing to do. But not today. Today I have choices to make and I am making them.

Fall is coming!

I love fall.

I love the changing leaves, the crisp weather, the smell of cinnamon, the sounds of football in the background, visiting Apple Hill and various pumpkin patches, baking pies and cookies, etc..

It all makes me feel so warm and cozy..... And inspired! When I feel this inspired I find that I must create, even if it's just using a few stolen minutes. And that's what I did yesterday.

With the back to school and fall coming, I made this cute little apple to go with my apple tree from the other day. And I'm not sure my little apple is complete, but it is definitely a good start and a welcome reminder of this lovely season sneaking up on us.

Shifting Focus

Generally, I'd say focus is a good thing. I enjoy having clear vision (even if it takes contact lenses) and I value mental focus. But right now, I am a little too focused. Focused to the point of obsession.

I have a tendency to get this way, especially when it's something I love. When I love something I love it with everything I possibly can. I like to think of this as passion. My husband lovingly refers to this as my pit bull quality, i.e. once I sink my teeth into something, it's hard to get me to release. But my current focus/obsession isn't so much from a love or passion.

My husband and I are looking at our life and considering some pretty big changes. Changes that could improve the quality of life for our family. But with big changes can come big stress and that's where my focus is. So I need to shift my focus.

One foot in front of the other

I am excited to say that I am taking action. I am making things happen. And how am I doing this? I am taking tasks that were once overwhelming and breaking them down into more manageable pieces. I like things broken down into pieces. When I break things down, I get things done. That way I can take it one step at a time. When I think about it, this most obviously applies to decluttering my home this summer. But I'm also starting to see a pattern.

For instance, I imagine that this is why the C25K program successfully turned me from couch potato to a 5K runner (just as it promises). And this must be why, while watching my husband's beginning ice hockey class last night, I found myself thinking, "Hey, that looks like fun." I've never had the yearning to play ice hockey (nor do I think I do now), but the instructor was just so good at breaking things down that he made it look fun and doable.

When things are broken down, it's just easier to face. Simpler to do.

So let me finish with some inspiration from a song that's been playing in my head, Put One Foot in Front of the Other from Santa Claus is Comin' to Town. Yes, you're reading that correctly. I am quoting the song sung by ol' Kris Kringle to the Winter Warlock in the classic Christmas special. You know there's only 100 days til Christmas come Friday. Exciting!

A Run to Remember

Today I'm running my second 5K. When I first started running in May I had no plans of a 5K, let alone three within a month (I have another one next weekend). But with this being the 10 year anniversary of 9/11 it just felt right, and even necessary, to be a part of something special to remember the lives that were lost.

Some of you might have noticed that I haven't been blogging as much this summer. In fact, I took a whole month off from blogging even though regular life continued on. My break came partially from the busyness of life, but also because I needed it. I've been on an amazing adventure of discovery this year which started with what I thought was a simple One Little Word choice, Clear. My experiences have led me from one discovery to another and it's been quite empowering.

Part of my adventure has included the opportunity to work with Tiffany Moore, life coach extraordinaire. Working with Tiffany has truly been a gift. It's been so helpful in gaining perspective, and sometimes changing perspective, when it comes to viewing my life and all that is in it. When I first started working with Tiffany I wasn't really clear on what life coaching was and what it could do, but I'm so glad I still took the plunge. So far I've learned that coaching isn't so much about fitting more into life, but rather getting more out of it.

One of the first activities Tiffany and I did together was to put together a top ten list of my values. I absolutely recommend doing this because being in touch with my values has been invaluable. It has helped me in so many ways as I live my day-to-day life and appreciate all that I have.

I must admit that I was sometimes surprised by the values that made it into my top ten, but as time progressed it usually became clear. Some values were on my list because they were important and I had an abundance, like love and creativity. But some values showed up on my list even though I felt like I didn't have much of them in my life.

Simplicity was one such value. I felt like I needed more simplicity in life. And you know what? I have found that I do have simplicity in my busy and often crazy life. Simplicity finds its way in, whether its time for a cup of tea or a story with my daughters or a laugh with my husband or a jog through our neighborhood, etc..

Hello again. I am finally back. I took a little blog summer vacation (and One Little Word Blog Hop vacation). It wasn't really a planned break, but sometimes you just need to hit pause (like when my 4 year old daughter asks to "pause the game" when she's playing--references from the age of DVRs and pausing TV).

So here I am. I've spent the summer with my one little word (clear) in mind, decluttering and organizing both my home and my head. It doesn't sound exciting, but it has been truly wonderful! I also continued to clear my head and work towards better health by running.

I'm excited to say that I completed the Couch to 5K program (C25K) and just ran my first 5K, the Race for the Arts, this past weekend. It was amazing! Between the energy of the crowd and the support of my family I was able to run my best time (not fast by any means, but no doubt my personal best). It was magical crossing the finish line, seeing my family, hearing my name called, as well as hearing the song "Ants Marching" by my very favorite band, Dave Matthews Band (How did they know?). In fact, the moment I crossed the finish line I heard the song lyrics "Take these chances" playing over the load speakers, which was absolutely perfect!

So for August's One Little Word assignment, I added the phrase to this great race photo my husband took of me crossing the finish line. I took a chance on myself when I started the C25K program, having never been a runner or an athlete (I'm a retired band nerd). And look at me now, I'm stronger, healthier, and more mentally clear. Hooray!

A little birthday magic

My baby, Katherine, just turned four years old yesterday. It's so amazing how time flies.

Last fall at a friend's birthday party, Katherine fell in love with horses. The party was held at a local equestrian center, Patriot Farms, so all the guests got to ride horses. I worried she'd be scared, but instead we witnessed her biggest, longest lasting smile. Katherine just lit up. After that she made sure to ask for cowgirl boots and a real horse from every Santa she encountered that Christmas season. Thankfully, Santa knew we weren't ready for the responsibility and delivered gigantic stuffed horses to the girls instead (they've slept with the girls every night since their arrival). She loves her stuffed horse, but she still dreams of a real horse.

With her passion for horses, I knew I wanted to return to Patriot Farms for Katherine's birthday. So last night Katherine and Rebecca enjoyed their very own horse riding lesson. This was such a wonderful birthday experience. In the past when it comes to the girls' birthdays, we usually throw big parties with lots of friends. These are great fun, but exhausting. Yesterday was really nice because we were able to give Katherine a fun and meaningful experience rather than just a big pile of presents (this also helped my mission to declutter--the girls certainly don't need anymore toys).

Now in the excitement of Katherine's birthday I never announced a winner for my Inspiration Giveaway. So here it is..........

I haven't participated in a Gussy Sews Inspiration Workshop for awhile (mainly because I've been crazy busy with my decluttering), but when I learned of this week's theme, your inspiration, it was hard not to want to join in. The better question for me is "what doesn't inspire me?," because I am inspired by so much. I love flipping through magazines and craft books, looking through blogs, collecting quotes, creating with friends, etc..

But when I truly think about it, what inspires me most is my two girls. There is nothing more energizing and inspiring than the "joie de vivre" of a 3 year old (she's just days from turning 4) and a 6-1/2 year old. I love watching them grow and play and learn, watching their different personalities develop. I love watching them light up when they find something they love.

But what I am inspired by most is the way they make me want to live my life. Because of them I am inspired to live my best and happiest life. I am inspired to appreciate today. I am inspired to not only dream for them, but to dream for me. And to quote my own artistic vision statement:

"As I live my life...I wish for my girls to learn from me. I would like them to recognize and cherish the beauty of life as I do. And I hope from my example they learn to live a life they love."

So to celebrate my inspired life and my girls I'd like to finally offer a giveaway I've hinted at. Summer "Vacate"tion

So I'm still decluttering like crazy, which makes for a pretty boring blog but a very happy me. The "organize and declutter" bug seems to be contagious because my girls are even getting in on the action.

Yesterday I bought a few cute containers for their room not sure if we'd use them, but when I took them in the girls' room to check colors and size I could tell I wasn't getting them back. They snatched up those new containers and quickly (and quietly) began organizing their piles of trinkets.

So things might be quiet on the blog, but just know that my family and I are happily organizing and decluttering our home. A "Vacate"tion of sorts--our clutter is vacating!

Celebrate Today

This year I have come to a lot of realizations, one of which is the importance of living for the moment. Too often I'm either caught up in dreams for the future or memories of the past. Both are good things to do, but in moderation. As I've mentioned before, I need to focus more of my energy on enjoying what I have right now. Like my wonderful husband, my beautiful daughters, great family and friends, good health, etc.. I am blessed in so many ways and I am grateful.

But as much as I'd like to say I'm always focused in the present, it's not always true. When life gets going and I end up functioning on autopilot I'm either two steps behind or worried about the future. Old habits, old ways of thinking, are just not as easy to shake as I would like. For instance, my tendency to procrastinate often sneaks up on me and has me feeling behind. Ironically, it's often because it feels as if what needs to be done is so far in the future.

This just happened to me with Kat Sloma's Liberate Your Art postcard swap. I signed up months ago to make just five postcards using my artwork, yet ended up finishing the postcards this morning. Not only did I end up paying extra postage to get them to Kat by Friday (the deadline), but the postal worker remembered helping me with another rushed mailing. Oh well.

Regardless, I did it! I got the postcards done. I got them mailed. And I should celebrate. What are you celebrating today?

What are you creating?

I love to create! That's a well-established fact. Creating makes me happy. It makes makes me feel alive. Yet lately I have not been creating.......at least not in the traditional crafty sense. Instead I have been creating space. I can't begin to tell you how happy this makes me. This has created room for more clarity and calm. It gives me a greater sense of control over my stuff, my thoughts, my life.

I love seeing these new open spaces throughout my home. Granted they're still the minority in our home, but they are still present. These open spaces help me stop and breathe. They help remind me to enjoy the beauty that surrounds me in my life. And they give me the room to dream and feel hopeful. I had no idea what a little decluttering could do.

This photo may look like a mess, but it really makes me happy. I am surrounded by excess whether it be too much stuff in my home or too many thoughts in my head. So I have been working on decluttering and simplifying.

I am working on organizing stuff I haven't touched in years. I'm emptying boxes. I'm making stacks for a garage sale. I'm writing lists and making schedules. I'm making dates with myself to declutter, to exercise (just finished the 9 week C25K program), to just be (trying meditation), etc..

I am gaining control and it feels great!

Today's the Day!

So today's the day.....Create With Me, the brand new Stampington publication, is now available! The girls and I got an advance copy a couple weeks ago and we love it! Rebecca keeps saying "I've never been in a magazine before" to which I reply "Me neither!" And I wish you could have seen the smile on Katherine's face when she saw her name and her artwork in the magazine.

Honestly, I'd love it even if we weren't in it (but it's just that much more fun to be included). It's a really inspiring collection of artwork and articles. If you're lucky enough to get your hands on a copy you'll find us towards the end of the magazine on page 124 (saving the best for last).

My family and I have a date night at the bookstore tonight just to see it on the shelves. And I might just have one to giveaway! Come by next week and see!

Appliqué Fun

Yesterday we had the pleasure of celebrating my nephew Connor's second birthday at SuperFranks (the absolute perfect place for both kids and parents--wish we had one). Since Connor already has a ton of toys, in part thanks to us and a ton of hand me downs, we went handmade with his gift.

I spruced up a couple shirts from Target with appliqués and threw in a cute matching pair of shorts. My sister-in-law Rachel is a big SF Giants fan, so it only seemed fitting to add a baseball appliqué to Connor's orange t-shirt. And Rachel is also a huge Dave Matthews Band fan (just like me!) so I had fun making a DMB shirt. I know it sounds more like I made shirts for Rachel, but I still love how the shirts turned out. In fact, I had so much fun that I whipped up some party shirts for the girls (a heart-shaped balloon for Katherine and a cupcake for Rebecca). I definitely see more appliqués in my future. Too cute and so much fun!

Whacky Waffles

Today's Inspiration Workshop theme is
Spending the Day Playing

Recently we spent the day "playing" with our waffle iron. This past Father's Day my husband decided to take us on a culinary adventure (I'm so lucky that my guy loves the kitchen). He was inspired to try some recipes from Rachel Ray's waffle week, a reminder that waffles aren't just for breakfast and our waffle iron isn't just for waffles.

So we started the day with biscuits and gravy (I must admit we doctored her gravy recipe). We had ham and cheese wa-ninis for lunch (using the waffle iron as a panini press--my idea after reading different ideas). For dinner we had Wa-zones (waffle calzones). And for dessert we had brownies.

What a fun and yummy day! Now the brownies still need work (they ended up over done), but everything else was a big hit. If anything, it has inspired us to try making other stuff using the waffle iron. A very useful idea with the hot summer weather (no need to turn on the oven). I just made buttermilk spice mu-ffles (muffins) this morning and I really want to try some chocolate chip cookies. This is so much fun! You should try it!

Sewing adventures with cute little girls

This past weekend, in the middle of finishing father's day gifts (including these fun neck coolers), I managed to sneak some girlie sewing projects in. I shortened a few pillow case dresses I made a couple weeks back and, with some ruffles, I transformed a couple pairs of worn out jeans. I've still got a few more projects in the works this week, like going through a pile of library books on sewing, making a few birthday gifts and trying this adorable tunic/dress tutorial. Can I just tell you how nice it is to have a good sewing machine and cute little girls! Fun, fun, fun!

Life has been a bit of a roller coaster this week, which I'm not quite ready to get into here. So it seemed fitting to look at roller coaster images when it came to this week's Inspiration Workshop theme--Green. I searched and searched, but never found an image that I liked. Although I did run into the odd concept of "green" pedal-powered roller coasters--both interesting and frightening (take a look here and here).

So I changed gears with the green theme and decided to share a favorite photo of mine, Lucky in Love, by my friend Kenna. This photo has made it onto my blog before, but it seemed too perfect not to share it again today.

From time to time I may run into troubles that stress me out, but at least I always have the love of my husband and my daughters, and my family and friends.

I am truly lucky in love.

Visiting Teahouse Studio

Yesterday I had the chance to visit the new Teahouse Studio in Berkeley. They were holding open studios this past weekend, so my family and I took advantage of a free Sunday and made a day of it.

It was great seeing the studio in person. It's very open and full of light, perfect for creating. The studio is the creative dream and collaboration of Stefanie Reneé, Mati Rose McDonough, and Tiffany Moore (aka Crafty Fanny). They just barely opened the studio in February, yet their line up of workshops is simply inspiring. How lucky am I to live fairly close to this special studio!

The inspiration didn't stop at just seeing the studio. I also was lucky enough to meet both Tiffany Moore and Mati Rose McDonough. It was wonderful to meet them and have the chance to talk with them. They were both really friendly and easy to talk to. It's sometimes easy to forget that there are real people behind the art, the blogs, the websites, etc.. They were also very sweet with Rebecca and Katherine. And as much as I know my girls were laying on the charm, I know they found themselves charmed as well.

I hope this was just the first of many visits to the Teahouse Studio.

Happy Inspiration

After the fun I had last week while participating in the Gussy Sews Inspiration Workshop, I knew I wanted to do it again. So this week's inspiration prompt was "kitchens." This immediately inspired me to want to try a few sewing projects, like personalizing some kitchen towels and making some coasters. But life got away from me (as usual) and I didn't find the time. I did manage to make one happy little coaster which I then used as inspiration for this happy little etsy treasury (I still need to figure out Pinterest). Enjoy!

Sew & Tell

I have a bit of a one track mind sometimes and right now I'm on the sewing track. So I thought I'd share some of my projects.

The mannequin pictured above was the first project I made with my new sewing machine. She came out of the Tone Finnanger book I mentioned last month, Sew Sunny Homestyle. She is the perfect tree topper for my year round, white Christmas tree (that I'm filling with angels and flowers and hearts....oh my).

And then yesterday, my mom, my girls, and I went to an art show in town. On top of seeing beautiful art and my talented nature photographer friend Kenna, we also learned about a brand new quilt shop, Fabric Garden, only open 1 month. The shop was filled with gorgeous quilts, beautiful fabric, and tons of inspiration. As a thank you for coming in to the shop, we were given a strip of fabric with instructions to make these cute tissue holders. So quick and simple to make.

And then I tried my hand at some pillow case dresses for the girls. I've seen so many pillow case dresses and they all look so cute. But I'm not really liking mine. Feeling like they look a little too much like sacks. I need to do a little more work, or rededicate this adorable fabric to a different dress style or maybe zipper pouches (I'm looking forward to tackling the zipper).

This past Thursday, I had all four of my wisdom teeth removed. I know...crazy, huh? It has been something I've needed to do for years, but I was avoiding it. I was scared. I was scared of the anesthesia, the recovery, the pain...... But it needed to be done and now it is! I can't even begin to tell you how happy I am. How proud I am. I faced my fears and I did it! I feel so strong and courageous! You'd think I had just done something exciting like bungee jump off a building (now there's a fear I don't plan on conquering). Nonetheless, it feels so good to know that I faced my fears. I am making things happen, getting things done that need to be done, and it feels great!

Handmade Inspiration

With the arrival of my newest "baby," my new sewing machine, has come a renewed interest in all things sewing. I've been pouring over sewing books and magazines. In fact I've requested just about every sewing book I could find from the library. Who knows when I'll have the time to go through all these books.....but that's not the point.

I've also visited dozens of websites and blogs which brings me to Gussy Sews. I've had this adorable blog on google reader for what seems like forever. But I had lost track of it, which is bound to happen when you subscribe to a million blogs (okay, this might be an exaggeration, but only slight). Well, revisiting Gussy Sews has inspired me. So today I am joining in her very first Inspiration Workshop to share some inspiration.

In a weekly newsletter, Gussy will provide an inspiration prompt to share on Thursdays and this week's prompt is all things handmade. Now this made my head spin at first because I love all things handmade. What's not to love? So it's taken quite a bit of thought to narrow down what I'd like to share. For instance,I thought about scouring Etsy or Flickr. Or maybe sharing a handmade gift that I've received or given. But what I finally decided to share today is the picture and memory of my very first knit project--a baby hat and sweater I made for my first born, Rebecca.

Learning to knit was a major accomplishment for me. I come from a pretty creative family (if you're interested you can read more about my family here), yet in 2004 at age 30 I was still discovering my more creative side and fumbling through it at times. When I learned I was having a baby and then discovered she was a girl, my creativity was ignited. She made me not only want to be more creative, she made it a need.

One of my grandmother's many talents is knitting. She knits the most gorgeous Christmas stockings for each member of the family, which is a family tradition she's carried on. I wanted to make sure that I would be able to help with this tradition so I wanted to learn to knit. My grandmother attempted to show me, but it was a challenge for me (which frustrated her a bit--how could I be so smart, yet so dense when it came to knitting?).

I still didn't want to give up, so I took classes at a local shop. I was successful and here's the photo of Rebecca, my pumpkin baby, in her hat and sweater. I used this photo for Rebecca's birth announcement. I know it's not the girliest, but she was born on Halloween so she is forever my pumpkin baby.

And here's my other daughter, Katherine, in her hat. She was born July 2007, so I made her a watermelon (in more girlie colors).

One Little Word Blog Hop

Can you believe it? It's June. It's kind of crazy to think we're through another month. Time sure does fly when you're having fun. Time has been flying so much that I find myself participating in Margie's wonderful One Little Word blog hop, yet still behind with my OLW album. This month's theme of documentation has always been easy and difficult for me all at the same time. I have definitely written list after list of goals, objectives, thoughts, etc.. many of which are inspired by my word, Clear. But it's hard for me to organize my written lists, just as it is difficult to organize my thoughts. I guess I still need to work on my mental clarity.

I'm doing my best to get through my lists, even if it is a slow process. One of my goals had been to catch up with Ali Edward's class. I might not have caught up with the album, but I did make some progress with the exercises. I wasn't satisfied with the action I took in March, so I made sure to take action this past month--action towards physical health. I started the Couch to 5K program on May 1st and just completed my 5th week, which ended with a 20 minute run. The program is 9 weeks long, so I still have some more to go, but I'm quite proud of my progress. I've never been athletic. I've never been a runner..........but that seems to be changing.

Fly High, Dream Big!

As I mentioned in my last post, I have a new toy--a new sewing machine! I got it last weekend and I've done something with it everyday since then, including some beginner classes yesterday.

If you've looked around my site before you might have stumbled across past sewing projects, including tons of bears, and you might be asking "beginner classes?" But truly I am a beginner. I may have been sewing for years, but I don't really know how.

I never took home-ec class. I took drafting and was a band nerd, leaving no time in the schedule for something useful like home-ec. My mom sewed a little, but I really only saw her mending stuff and that didn't grab my interest (mending just wasn't my thing). My grandma was a great seamstress. She sewed amazing things, including clothes for my mom's Barbie doll, but we didn't live close enough to see her in action.

I've dabbled and faked it, but now that I have a new, nice machine, I wanted to learn more technique. So I was able to start taking a few classes at a local sewing shop and I was amazed by all the stuff I had been ignoring. I had no idea about the different types of needles, threads, fabrics, and stitches. It's so exciting to learn and my mind is just racing with ideas.

I did a little dabbling this past week before my classes, and was still pretty thrilled by the outcome. A while back I discovered a series of beautiful sewing books written by Tone Finnanger. Her books and projects are absolutely dreamy. This week I was lucky enough to find one at JoAnn's with a 50% coupon, Sew Sunny Homestyle. And I had to run home and try my hand at a few projects.

I'll share more of my projects when I can get better pictures, but I just had to share my favorite today--a sweet little bird (the picture doesn't do her justice). When I started I didn't know what I was going to do with this bird, but as I saw her come together my vision became clear. I mixed together a little wire work (inspired by Jen Swift), embroidered some ribbon with the words "Fly High, Dream Big," and now she is the perfect birthday present for my flyer friend, Sylvia. I can't wait to give it to her! And I can't wait to make more!

The Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day.....or was it?

Does anyone remember reading, Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good Very Bad Day? It used to be a favorite of mine. Yesterday, Rebecca was reading it at school while I seemed to be living it. It was just one of those days.

I woke up to a dreary, rainy day, not your typical California spring day. I had stayed up too late the night before enjoying the quiet of a sleeping house, so I was now exhausted. My mind was also distracted because we were awaiting medical test results for a loved one. Ultimately, the day turned out fine. Good news came back from the doctor. But for the majority of the day, it was terrible, horrible, no good, and very bad.

This seemed to be even more exaggerated when I got to work. With my sour mood came sour patients. Now don't get me wrong, I wasn't taking my mood out on my patients (nobody got an eye poked out, remember I am an eye doctor). It just seemed like my bad day was bringing in the crankier and more demanding patients. My negative mood seemed to be affecting my world, hmmm..... I've been trying my best to choose happiness, but as you know somedays it can be tough. But wow! What a connection between my outlook and my world.

As the day went on, things did get better. I learned the test results were good, I enjoyed some time at home with my family, I watched two of my happy shows, Glee and Raising Hope, and I got to bed at a decent hour.

And what a difference that has made for today. I woke up early enough to run (coming home just minutes before rain). I've had a schedule full of more positive patients (more of what I'm accustomed to). I've received some fun emails, like the confirmation that my article for Create With Me will be in the first issue! Yeah!

So I know it's hard to be happy all the time. I was just reminded of this first hand. But what a difference a more positive mood makes. So if things seem to be getting you down remember to keep your chin up, focus on the positive, and be happy!

Do less and enjoy more!

For the past couple weeks my thoughts have been haunted by something I read. I've been yearning for a happier and simpler existence (I imagine I'm not alone in this wish). So I was reading a post from Zen Habits (a blog I learned of from Ali Edward's blog) about the 38 life lessons he's learned in his 38 years. I must admit I didn't get through the entire list because the first several gave me so much to think about. There were quite a few that spoke to me, but #13 really got stuck. It kept playing over and over in my head:

"13. You will miss a ton, but that’s OK. We’re so caught up in trying to do everything, experience all the essential things, not miss out on anything important … that we forget the simple fact that we cannot experience everything. That physical reality dictates we’ll miss most things. We can’t read all the good books, watch all the good films, go to all the best cities in the world, try all the best restaurants, meet all the great people. But the secret is: life is better when we don’t try to do everything. Learn to enjoy the slice of life you experience, and life turns out to be wonderful."

It was just the right thing I needed to read. The perfect reminder. It's crazy how much is thrown at us on a daily basis between our schedules, the Internet, TV, books, magazines, etc.. And then If you add in all my hobbies and interests, as well as my various goals and dreams--it's all exhausting.

This idea of trying to do too much has come up before, and I've been successful at cutting some stuff out. But that sometimes feels as if we're missing out. But really it allows us the time to enjoy our life. Just like I mentioned in my previous blog post, I need to slow down and enjoy the moment. But I also need to do less and enjoy more. Sometimes that's easier said than done.

Magical "Popcorn" Trees

I've been meaning to share an experience I had several weeks ago so I thought today is as good as any to share.

It all started with what I felt was an unfortunate event--a loose temporary crown that needed fixing. Long story short, the newly scheduled dental appointment left me with a few hours to kill away from home (so as not to waste gas) with Katherine, my three year old. Luckily the weather was beautiful (we had just come off a week filled with rain), so I took Katherine to an outdoor shopping center with fountains, play areas, and a train. As I enjoyed my time with Katherine, away from my chores and household duties, I realized several things.

I don't spend nearly enough time enjoying Katherine. I'm fortunate to work only four days a week and Rebecca goes to school, so I'm blessed with several mornings of just me and Kat. And what do I do with those mornings? We either run errands--grocery shopping, dance class, etc.. Or I'm wrapped up in household chores--laundry, dishes, etc.. Now I realize all of this needs to get done. And I do get help from my husband. But I also need to remember to enjoy the moment a little more. I need to let the laundry and dishes pile up every once in a while so I can enjoy a special morning with Katherine. She's only going to be little for so long. And she is precious, or as she likes to say she is "special."

I also realized that I rush a lot. We're always rushing to get to school or work. Dance class, ice skating, etc.. It's always go, go, go, rush, rush, rush. So much so, that I found myself rushing Katherine during our agenda free morning. Thankfully I caught myself and was able to slow down. It served as a great reminder that I need to slow down and enjoy the moment much more. Just as I came to this realization, I was rewarded with a special treat....

**I first have to set up the story with another story. Please bear with me and my rambling**

Weeks earlier, the girls and I were enjoying the changes of spring wherever we went. We especially loved all the trees with white blossoms, which we called "popcorn" trees. In fact our street was lined with "popcorn" trees. I kept wanting to photograph them, but I never slowed down to do it. And then we had a week of rain and our "popcorn" was washed away. I was bummed I had missed my moment. In fact, I created my own "popcorn" tree to remind myself of this.

Well, that morning with Katherine, we turned the corner to walk to the playground and you know what I saw? "Popcorn" trees! What a blessing. What a sign. After having just connected the dots for myself, I was rewarded. I realized that I needed to slow down and enjoy the moment. I did just that and I was greeted by beautiful "popcorn" trees. So I took my pictures, enjoyed Katherine, and learned my lesson....

Slow down and enjoy the moment!

Last night I had the pleasure of attending a lecture at the Crocker Art Museum. Now this wasn't your standard art lecture, it was about "sculpting" a career in the arts (a lofty dream of mine, I suppose). It was presented by local artist, Gayle Rappoport Weiland. She had tons of useful information and inspiration to share. I had been feeling a bit stressed by life, and this class was just right to lift me back up. Gayle was really good about reminding us that anything is possible. We just have to to put our minds to it and take action--a common theme in my life lately.

So here's to believing in ourselves, dreaming, and taking action. Happy Wednesday!

Ready, Set, Go!

After my epiphany/pep talk the other day, I finally got myself going. I started working towards my good health goals again. I worked out on our ellipse Saturday and started the Couch to 5K program yesterday (and ran today!). I even ate all the healthy things my husband lovingly packed in my lunch on Saturday, which in itself is a small victory. I'm notorious for leaving the carrot and celery sticks uneaten, simply carrying the same baggie back and forth in my lunch for days. There have been studies showing how sugar-addicted mice would rather starve than switch from their sugary, junk food diet to a healthy diet. Unfortunately, I sometimes feel like one of those mice, even though my diet is not really that full of junk. I just don't seem to crave that bag of carrots and celery. So I'm working on other easy alternatives to get in my rainbow of healthy food.

I have already begun to enjoy the quiet time that walking/running gives me to think. You could say I came to another important realization in just my first "run." It's crazy how much I seem to be learning about myself this year. I realized that I am an excellent starter. I start reading books. I start creative projects. I start health kicks and new fitness routines. What I really need to work on is the finishing part.

So it is time for me to get serious. No more planning. It's time for doing. And it's time to finish what I start. Time to finish those books and finish those creative projects. And it's time to stick with a healthy and active lifestyle.....for good. I know I won't be perfect, but you know what? That's okay. As long as I try my best each and every day, that is all that matters (Brene Brown would be so proud).

So join me. Let's start doing the things we've been planning to do. And let's finish what we start!

One Little Word Blog Hop

I can't believe it's May. Wow! Where is the year going? Today I am participating in the OLW Blog Hop again. I just love seeing everyone's class projects and reading about the journeys brought by our chosen words. But I must admit, I am now two projects behind in Ali Edward's class. Hmmm. Now I do still love the class even if I haven't had as much time to sit with the projects. And I may not have the pages made for my album, but Ali's prompts do inspire much thought.

**In fact, this morning I'm sneaking into my sad little pre-written post to celebrate taking that one little action today! The one I was supposed to take in March. I woke up early, laced up my running shoes, and started the C25K program. I ran/walked 1.8 miles this morning. Hooray!!! I'll share more tomorrow**

My word, clear, is still quite present in my life and it is clear that my word has inspired a journey, both expected and unexpected. A journey towards clear thoughts and clear goals. A journey towards good health AND happiness. And the gift of a clear and open heart.

It's really amazing to see all that surrounds our One Little Words. It's so inspiring to see the different words and projects, as well as the stories and journeys. The Plan

Do you ever find yourself so wrapped up in planning that you don't get around to doing? For instance, as a kid I remember playing with dolls or cars and taking a ton of time to set up and build the perfect house or city, yet I would "play" just a little? Or in college, I would spend lots of time making color coded study schedules for different classes when really I should've just been studying. Well right now I am falling victim to this planning vs. doing.

If you visited before you may know that I've really been trying to embrace "now" (trying not to worry so much about the past or wait for the "perfect" future). But I seem to be slipping into old ways. I find myself reading books, writing lists, watching tv programs, and following websites about living a healthy and happy life. I am reading and learning all the things I need and want to do, but I'm having trouble DOing them. I've fallen off course a bit and can't seem to get back on track. I am stuck in planning mode. It's just so easy for me to plan. I love to plan. I suppose it makes sense. My mom just commented about being raised a boy scout, being prepared for any situation. And you could say the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. And to be prepared you must plan.

But this is life. I've got to stop preparing and planning for life. Life is to be lived, right? It's important to plan and be prepared as long as it doesn't interfere with living. And right now I think I need to readjust. It's time to stop spending all my time planning. It's time to DO!

Here I am! We are back from spring vacation. Okay we've been back since late Sunday night, but Monday was filled with loads of laundry and grocery shopping. Yesterday and today have meant school and work for everyone and I must say it's hard getting back into the swing of things. I keep reminding myself that happiness is a choice, but I must admit that sometimes that's easier said than done. I'm not so much sad, just a bit wiped out. That must mean our vacation was a success, right?

So I wanted to still share a happy thought for positively Wednesday. When on vacation, my family and I painted ceramics together and I made a cute tile that said "Be Happy." I was excited to share it with you today, but you know what? In the morning rush to get everyone to school and work, I forgot it so I can't photograph it for you yet. Soon! So instead here are my two cuties in their new Vegas shirts. That should be good for a smile :)

As I mentioned, we're on spring break at my grandma's house in Boulder City, NV. Today we took the girls to the Natural History Museum of Las Vegas to see the dinosaurs and my daughter lost her third wiggly tooth there. Such a simple thing brings with it so many emotions. Rebecca is beaming. Excited for the tooth fairy. Excited to tell her friends. Proud to show off her new smile.

And I can't believe my "baby" is loosing her baby teeth. She is growing up so much each and everyday. Wow!

You can't get more positive than the magic of childhood, from both a child's and a parent's perspective. Happy times!

Spring break

Choices & the Courage to Fly

What message is your heart eager to share?

Recently I have found myself on a journey of self discovery. I suppose in life we are always learning more about ourselves, but lately it's been different for me. It's been more than that. My discoveries have been more meaningful and powerful. My life has become clearer. Even though life itself has essentially remained the same, the way I look at it and the way I approach it has changed. And this is what my heart is eager to share......

I have a choice.

For too long I had focused on the aspects of my life that I wanted to change. The things that made me unhappy. The stuff that made me feel trapped. Things like not having enough time or money. I had spent nine years in college and beyond only to "find myself" after the fact. At that point real world responsibilities and student loans had already locked me into my "chosen" career path. It kept me from doing what my heart truly wanted, being home with my daughters and making art. Or at least that's how I felt.

But then one afternoon I was sitting at a bookstore flipping through a book and I read the words "happiness is a choice." Hmmm? Is it really that simple? Everything suddenly became clear to me. All the information life had given me over the years--inspiring quotes, favorite books, wise words, etc--it all fell into place like a giant puzzle. I realized that I was in control. I had the pieces necessary to live a life I loved--right now! Why wait? I had always been waiting for the "perfect" time to start living a life I loved. I had been living my life focused on a "perfect" future. But now was the time. And it didn't require big changes like quitting my job. All it required was a shift in my thinking.

This shift in thought presented me with a cascade of choices. I can choose to enjoy life--right now! I can choose to appreciate my life--right now! I can choose to be the best me--right now! I can choose to live the life I want--right now! If I want to spend more time with my daughters, then spend more time with them. If I want to be an artist, then make art. If I want to be happy, then be happy.

I must admit that some days its not as easy to make these choices. I'm really not the cheerleader type that I've always associated with eternal bliss and optimism. Life can sometimes take it out out of me. I can get bogged down by the everyday stuff like laundry, dishes, the bills, etc.. But everyday I try my best to focus on being grateful for all that I have. And that makes my heart swell. I love my life. I have so much to be thankful for and I see that now. I may not be living my "perfect" life right now but I am enjoying and loving my life right now.

And as much as I focus on living in the moment and loving right now, I do still dream. I realize dreaming is looking to the future. But I now focus on enjoying the act of reaching for my dreams. Today I would like to share a wonderfully inspiring blog post written by Stephey Baker over at Marked By the Muse. The post is about that big question, "Am I an artist?" I have struggled with my response to this question for quite some time. I know that I am creative. I absolutely love making things. In fact, I have too many hobbies and interests to count. But it's been hard to embrace the title of Artist. I'm not sure I can explain why. Maybe it's because I don't have artwork hanging in galleries. Or maybe it's because I don't paint on an easel. Maybe it's because I don't make a living making art.

But with time and the help of my young daughters, especially Rebecca, I have begun to realize that my definition of an artist was entirely too limited. Life is art. It is everywhere we look and in one way or another, we are all artists. So please enjoy reading Stephey's post and join me as I declare "Yes! I am an artist!"

Opening up

I have so much I want to share, but right now I need to write. My daughters and I were fortunate enough to have artwork chosen for Stampinton's new children's art publication, Create With Me. So as much as I'd love to sit and share the thoughts and stories that are building up in my mind, I need to finish writing our article.

And can I just tell you how excited we are about this opportunity?!

The Sweet Life / OLW Blog Hop

Here we are, another month into the year. It's One Little Word (OLW) Blog Hop time. It's time to check in with my OLW for the year, Clear. March seemed to bring less clarity for me than January and February, just as Ali Edwards mentioned. I seemed to lose touch with my word and became scattered in my thoughts and actions. I haven't completed March's OLW project on paper, but I did try to "take one little action."

My action was to start clearing out my bad eating habits. I needed to focus on eating less fat and sugar, and eating more fruit and vegetables. The first little step I took in the month was a shopping trip to Costco without the cheap hot dog for lunch. I've also been reading books that have me examining my troubled relationship with sugar. I'm a healthy eater for the most part, but when I do run into trouble, sugar is almost always involved. Yet it's hard to imagine giving up sugar completely. I gave it up for one week last year and what an eye opener that was. Sugar is in everything. And I have so many fond memories tied into sugar and desserts and baking. I seem to associate these things with love and i just about mourn the loss of these experiences when I think about giving up sugar. I want my daughters to have these same fond memories to cherish, but I also want us to live a healthy life. So as I struggled with this, I came to a realization. I am already building these same warm memories without food and without sugar. We've been doing it through art.

Both my girls love creating whether it be through drawing, painting, music, or dance. In fact, Rebecca, my oldest, started to proudly call herself an artist well before I was comfortable using the term for myself. Just the other day I spent the morning creating art with my little one, Katherine, and it was wonderful. And as unrelated as it may seem, this realization makes it a little less scary to tackle the topic of sugar and where it fits in my life and the life of my family. It'll be interesting to see what April brings.

I seem to be a bit of a broken record, but I am so happy it is spring. I'm loving the sunny days, the warmer weather, and all the beautiful flowers in bloom. My heart is racing with excitement because of all the inspiration I see around me and my head is filling up with more ideas, techniques, and projects I want to try.

For instance, I can't wait to finish my piece from the other day and share it with you. I got my inspiration from what my daughters have been calling "popcorn" trees that have been in bloom for several weeks now. Unfortunately I didn't stop and take a picture of their beauty and our last set of rainstorms washed most of the "popcorn" away. So this piece will be a good reminder of their beauty.

It will also remind me to stop and enjoy the moment because moments can pass so quickly, in every aspect of life. So be sure to enjoy the moment and have a Happy Wednesday!

Today was a beautiful spring day. The sun was shining, birds were singing, and I was able to squeeze in some "playtime" between laundry, dishes, etc.. I was joined by my trusty sidekick Katherine (my 3 year old), and when we began, I had no idea what we were doing or where our projects would take us. I just knew I wanted to create, to put paint to canvas and just play. We had a wonderful time and I'm thrilled with where my project is going. I also love how Katherine followed my lead, doing everything I did, but ended up with a completely different project. You gotta love that. Art is so much fun! Here's a sneak peek of my project. When it's finished, I'll be sure to share.

"With All My Heart" Etsy Treasury

In the past, I've had the pleasure of being included in several etsy treasuries. Most recently I was included in a beautiful "Flaming Turquoise" treasury and it got me thinking about treasuries. I must admit that my husband got me thinking, too, when he responded to my facebook posting of the treasury with "I have no idea what that means but it sounds cool and I love you. Grats!" So I explained it to him--a treasury is a collection of beautiful things. I then realized how much fun it would be to put one together and surprisingly, I had never done one before. And I love beautiful things. And I love collecting things. A perfect match!

So last night when I was tinkering with etsy, I noticed that my favorites included a bunch of hearts. I'm not exactly sure why this surprised me, because I love hearts. In fact, I am lucky enough to have a heart shaped diamond on my wedding ring. I tend to be a bit of a dreamer and a romantic, so I'm sure that's where my love of hearts stems from. So inspired by what I saw, I decided to put together my first etsy treasury, With All My Heart. This treasury is extra special because it also includes some friends and loved ones. So enjoy and have a nice weekend!

It is quite the rainy, blustery day today. But it is Spring nonetheless and it's been wonderful to see all the flowers and trees in bloom. I've been doing my best to focus on the brighter side of things in my quest for more happiness and I've been doing a good job for the most part. It can be tough sometimes, especially when I get tired, but nobody's perfect, right?

This weekend, my birthday weekend, I enjoyed time with family and my new love--my iPad2. It was a birthday present from my family and I love it!! My husband actually waited in line all day on the 11th when they were released and I received it for my birthday on the 18th. Hooray!

With it being so new, there are not a lot of options when it comes to accessories, especially cases. So I took care of that by making my own. I was good and used stuff I already had in my stash. I lined it with pretty white fleece and covered it with canvas. I was going to paint it or embellish it more, but now that it's made I think I like it just the way it is. It is so cute and fun to make, that I might just have to make more. My new love could use a few outfits, right?

Yesterday I enjoyed some time in my craft studio creating (in between cleaning house and taking care of the girls). For a while now, I've been wanting to either buy or create a necklace with my one little word, clear. The other day I was inspired by Lorrie Everitt's glass charm tutorial. I couldn't get my hands on a glass charm, but I had been wanting to try making a scrabble tile pendant, so it seemed like a good alternative. Earlier this year I had also found an eyeglass charm in my stash that I thought would be perfect with my word, clear. And then I thought it would be fun to use the scrabble letter "C." Obviously the word clear starts with the letter "c," but then if you say it out loud, it represents the word "see," as in I can see clearly now.

Today I'm trying something new here in my little corner of the internet. This year I seem to be on a lovely, but unexpected, journey of self discovery like no other. And in my "travels" I seem to be running into the topic of happiness a lot. And it makes me so happy! So I'd like to share my happiness with you here on a regular basis. I haven't truly figured out all that I wish to share, but I know that I want to share. And what better day to celebrate being happy and positive than on a Wednesday. I mean, who couldn't use a little extra happy in the middle of the week, right? So here is Positively Wednesday!

This week, I had thought about sharing some happy reading and thoughts, but then yesterday I was inspired to take a different direction. At lunch I was outside enjoying sunshine, blue skies, and fluffy clouds--Hooray! I was reminded of a silly little video that my husband recently shared with me. This week I finally found the time to watch the videos for Christy Tomlinson's new She Art class (of course it was in the middle of the night because my puppy Sprinkles and then my three year old, Katherine, wouldn't let me sleep). After seeing the videos, I had no choice but to fit in the time to make my very own She Art. It just made my mind race with ideas and inspiration. My little heart was just racing with excitement as I created my background and girl. I really enjoyed using colors that I wouldn't normally use together. I felt comfortable knowing that if I got to a point that I didn't like, there was always another layer coming that could change that. There are some little things I wish I had done different, but all in all I am in love with my girl. She makes me so happy, as well she should right?.

OLW March Blog Hop

Today I am joining in on some One Little Word (OLW) blog hopping fun thanks to Margie from Ali Edward's OLW class (which I absolutely LOVE). So for those of you visiting for the first time, I'm Jen. I have two adorable little girls, a loving & supportive husband, and a full-time job as an optometrist. But my heart truly belongs to all things creative, which is what this blog & By Jen are for.

I've been choosing a word each year for several years now, and this year I chose the word Clear (kind of funny when you think about me being an eye doctor, huh?). I wasn't sure about my word at first, but with the help of Ali's class I have fallen in love with my word and all it stands for (if you'd like, you can read more here and here). Not only is it helping me to clear out physical clutter like my overflowing house and my excess weight, but my OLW is helping me find mental clarity, including my very own "Aha" moment.

So let me walk you through my photos and my thought process from February's assignment. Top left: one day while giving an eye exam, I noticed how my "live" charm was dangling and it seemed like a clear message. Top middle: this is a portion of a poster in my office--I like the blue sky and the word floating in it. Top right: A glass of water--both a literal and figurative symbol (good health). Middle left: A clear counter--a wonderful accomplishment. Middle: The clear sky through my daughter's hands--it just felt right. Middle right: A close up shot of our elliptical trainer--still getting used this year even now as we enter March. Bottom left: A mixed media piece I made in response to my "Aha" moment. Bottom middle: our Wii is also helping me with my weight loss goals and clear mind. Bottom right: some of the books that have helped clear my thoughts. And the large shot is my favorite--I just love the blue sky in the midst of grey clouds and traffic. I still need to sew a page protector for it.

So far I am loving this class and I can't wait to see what's in store for March! Thanks again for stopping by today. My Husband's "World"

As I mentioned in my last blog post, my husband celebrated a birthday this past weekend (which happened to be a pretty big one....the Big 40!). So now I can finally share the really cool gift I made for him. I've had this idea in my head for years and finally made it happen for this birthday .

To make this I started with an old globe

(just something I had in all my clutter).

I covered it with gesso.

After the gesso dried, I should have sanded it lightly

(but I can get ahead of myself when I'm excited)

I then collected a ton of pictures to print.

I printed the photos on regular gift wrapping tissue paper.

Now you might be wondering how I printed on tissue paper. It took some trial and error, which included yanking wads of tissue paper out of my printer. But here's what finally worked on a fairly consistent basis with very few tissue paper jams. I cut the tissue paper to 8.5" x 11" and then taped it to a regular 8.5" x 11" sheet of paper using scotch tape. I taped the top and bottom edge along the full length of the edge. This is very important for the front edge going into the printer.

See the tape along the top edge. Wish I could have gone a better photo.

This allowed me to feed the paper into my inkjet printer. I then cut out my pictures and carefully adhered them to the globe using Mod Podge (I didn't get any pictures of this--got ahead of myself again). Be cautious because too much Mod Podge can rip the photos.

It was quite the labor of love, but I'm really happy with how it turned out. And Daniel loved it! He was really blown away seeing his life represented like that. The globe was a great success!

I'd actually love the chance to do another globe, but in a mixed media style. I'll have to keep my eyes peeled for another globe.

I had a wonderful weekend (as I hope you did, too)! Not only did I get to celebrate by hubby's birthday on Friday, and again on Saturday, but I also got to take Donna Downey's Inspiration Journal Class at Scrapbook Territory in Berkeley on Sunday. I got to join Sylvia, Tina, and Paula for this great art adventure. Donna's class was amazing, packed full of great info and inspiration. And now I am excited to say that I have an art journal! Hooray! I've been wanting to start one for so long and now I have one! So here's a peek at some of the fun stuff I did during class (and a little bit from after). So I may have read and been inspired by The Procrastinator's Handbook recently, but sometimes old habits die hard. We were frantically finishing Rebecca's Valentine's last night up until bed (and a little past), but overall we're very happy with how they turned out. Rebecca just loves them! And that's what counts, right?

The Sound of "Inspiration"

Lately my girls have been loving musicals and this makes me so very happy! I really love musicals even though I poked lots of fun at them growing up (I mean people spontaneously bursting into song and dance, how can you not make fun of that?). Even with the joking, I still loved watching them. When I was little I loved watching The King and I (I imagine I loved all the amazing dresses) and we would watch the Sound of Music what seemed to be every Sunday. I love Julie Andrews in Mary Poppins, Gene Kelly in Singing in the Rain, and Judy Garland in The Wizard of Oz (but I do have to admit I didn't see the Wizard until I was an adult--gasp!).

So the other day we were listening to the Sound of Music soundtrack in the car and you know what? I actually started to listen to the words. There is a lot of inspirational and motivational words mixed into these sometimes silly musicals.

For instance there's the obvious ones, I Have Confidence In Me:

".....With each step I am more certain,

Everything will turn out fine.

I have confidence,

The world can all be mine!....

All I trust I leave my heart to,

All I trust becomes my own!

I have confidence in confidence alone...."

Or My Favorite Things:

"...When I'm feeling sad

I simply remember my favorite things

Or Climb Every Mountain (I must admit this was not a favorite of mine growing up, but I love the sentiment now).

"Share" & Tell

The other day I mentioned that I would share how I made these adorable notebooks, so here I am. I use these notebooks to jot down the obvious to-do's but also bits of ideas and inspiration that might fly in and out of my head in such a hurry. I have them strategically placed throughout my house and in my purse. They also make nice little gifts, which is what I originally made them for. But lately I have found them to be invaluable as I also strive for a clearer mind. I can't tell you how helpful it is to write stuff down so it can stop swirling around in my head like a twister. At the end of the day I can collect my "thoughts" from all over the house, rather than from my tired little head. This weekend I worked on putting together binders and master lists to add my notes to because I can just imagine myself running around the house wondering where I wrote something down. So let's get started. It's very simple and the possibilities are endless.

I first start with a small composition book (4.5"x3.25") that you can easily find just about anywhere like a Target or a Walmart for less than $1. I measured the full length (including front, back, and spine) and the height to be 7.25" x 4.5". I used these dimensions to create a blank document in Photoshop Elements and then I decorated. I've been collecting quotes (I'm a collector by nature, thus my need to declutter) which I use on the cover. The quotes are great inspiration to see as I use the notebooks throughout the day. I like the clean look of white text on a colored background, but really anything goes. You can use scrapbook paper and photos, even some paint and stamps if your heart desires. With my original notebooks I printed my text using Microsoft Word (using a text box to achieve the colored background and white text) on rectangles that just fit the front and back. I then used decorative scrapbook tape to cover the spine.

When you trim your printouts/paper, there's no need to worry about getting it exact. I like to sand off the excess after I attach it to give the book a really finished look. You can also use an X-acto knife to trim the excess. To attach the printouts or decorative paper, you can use the adhesive from a Xyron machine which I did originally. I've also used Mod Podge and it actually worked really well, too. To avoid bubbles I only worked on one side at a time and I coated both the notebook and the paper with Mod Podge using a foam brush. And there you have it. It's as simple as that. Wasn't that fun?

I haven't mentioned it here lately, but I am still plugging along when it comes to my weight loss goals and the Green Tangerines Biggest Loser Challenge. I am off to a slow start when it comes to the numbers on the scale, but I am still quite pleased with my progress thus far. I am proud to say I am fitting some type of exercise into my daily routine. During lunch on workdays I've enjoyed walking to a bookstore nearby. At home I've been using our Wii Fit Plus, but I also hope to start to Zumba since I'm getting into better shape (Zumba kicks my behind). I also ride our elliptical machine while watching inspiring TV, like Peter Walsh and Oprah's Master Class. Now in the past I have been good at starting these good habits, but what takes the hard work is sticking with it. But here it is already February and I am still pushing on (even with the scale not really encouraging me). I feel more energetic and more optimistic that I can make these changes stick. I also value the fact that I have to weigh-in weekly for the GT Biggest Loser Challenge until April 1st. It helps to answer to someone other than myself, at least in the beginning while I am forming my good habits. So wish me luck as I continue my quest for a healthier me, or better yet, join me!

Collecting my thoughts

My head is spinning (a common feeling of mine). I've been having tons of fun visiting blogs from all over the world with One Heart, One World. Our February assignment for One Little Word has been posted. Inspired by Peter Walsh, I'm still trying my best to clear household clutter. I'm letting go of a bunch of magazines tonight because I am never going to get to them "later," which I am coming to terms with. I'm also trying to get organized with the inspiration of a Bowl Full of Lemons. Also in an attempt to clear my head of "clutter," I am starting to write more lists (thanks to inspiration from The Procrastinator's Handbook). I'm also enjoying Brene Brown's book The Gifts of Imperfection and look forward to reading Blissology when I am done (trying to finish one book before starting another, because I often don't go back to finish what I've abandoned). So I hope to have more to share in the next couple of days, including how to make my cute little notebooks (which I hope to sprinkle throughout the house so I can write down my thoughts and needs wherever I may be).

This is more than enough to keep me busy, but I still try to find the time to add "artist" to that list. I absolutely love being creative and this is where I share my artistic passion and journey.

This year seems to be taking me on an extra special journey thus far. Rather than resolutions, I chose one word "Clear" to inspire my year. And so far, as I've been clearing my household clutter and bad habits, I've started to enjoy some mental clarity. I've realized that it is time for me to enjoy my life right now. At times I can focus too much on the future and all that I want for it. But I need to cherish right now because that is the gift I have in my hands right now. Inspired by my recent paradigm shift, I created this mixed media piece.

"Aha!"

So I had an "Aha!" moment the other day. As I've mentioned, one of the things that I am working on this year is clearing out our household clutter. So with this goal also comes the goal to make use of what I have, rather than buying more stuff. So I ran across this quote and thought it was fitting. I wrote it down and moved on. But then a couple days later, the light bulb turned on--This quote is about life. It's not just about material things, its about my life. I need to be happy with what I have, right now, because that is all I have. All we have is right now! Be happy. Make the most of it. Now I know this might be obvious to everyone else, but this wasn't so obvious to me. But it is now. As I process this more, I'm sure I'll have more to share, but I thought this was a good start!

So here's to embracing my life right now, imperfections and all!

A lovely weekend

January 2011 One Little Word Class Assignment

Where to begin....I had a lovely weekend. I never used to be one to use the word lovely, but 1. My weekend was lovely, and 2. I just love how fellow Kelly Rae Flyer Jacqueline uses it--its so happy. It gives me warm fuzzies. I had tons of fun while getting tons of things accomplished!

We had a movie night with popcorn, Despicable Me (cute movie), and good friends. I continued my quest for a clutter-free home and am enjoying the results (it's so much easier to keep things clean when there's a place for everything).

I finished reading The Procrastinator's Handbook: Mastering the Art of Doing It Now and I am so proud of myself. I'm notorious for starting books but not finishing them, but I felt that this one needed to be finished--it's just wrong to put a procrastinator's book off until later (Can you say "missing the point"?). It was a great book for me to read. It offered lots of suggestions for getting life organized.

I also enjoyed some time in my craft room finishing January's assignment for Ali Edward's One Little Word Class. I loved doing it, and I love how it turned out. In the spirit of clearing clutter, I've been trying to use items I already have rather than buying more stuff. So rather than buy the adorable divided page protector, I sewed one myself (I actually have a box of old sheet protectors). It took some trial and error, but I am thrilled with the results. And I am LOVING my one little word--Clear. I know it's still the beginning of the year, but I feel really connected to it. I am really looking forward to seeing all it will bring. So far it has brought loveliness ♥ ♥ ♥

Being creative

Earlier this week I was awarded a Stylish Blog Award from my friend Sylvia at Baxter's Mom and tagged by my friend Leslie at Words of Me Project. With Sylvia's award I am to share 7 things about myself that you don't know about me. With Leslie's post I am supposed to share the answers to 19 questions, so that you might also learn more about me. So I am being creative (or cheating) and answering 7 of the 19 questions:

1. If you have pets, do you see them as merely animals, or are they members of your family? We do have pets, several goldfish (which I see as pets) and Sprinkles (our almost 1 year old puppy). I do see Sprinkles as a member of the family (sorry goldfish).

4. What would you do with a billion dollars? Pay off all our debt, and the debt of family and friends for a fresh start. And have the money to send the girls to college.

5. What helps to pull you out of a bad mood? Music....I LOVE music!

8. If you are currently in a relationship, how did you meet your partner? I met my husband during college. We worked at the library together (he was a student supervisor--my "boss"). It wasn't until a good 5 years later (after becoming best friends for most of that) that we realized we belonged together. I like to say we were the last to know (family and friends just knew when the saw us together).

9. If you could watch a creative person in the act of the creative process, who would it be? Donna Downey, Kelly Rae Roberts, and Ali Edwards......I could go on and on and on.

10. What kinds of books do you read? Actually I'm not a big reader, but I adore craft books. It's actually quite an obsession...I have a huge collection.

13. Would you give up all junk food for the rest of your life for the opportunity to visit outer space? No, not really. Outer space is not somewhere I think I'd be comfortable, junk food or not.

I'd also like to pass along the award to other bloggers I admire which include Sylvia and Leslie. Sylvia has been such a great friend and I adore her artwork. And I love reading Leslie's writing--often what she writes is exactly what I feel. I also enjoy reading Peculiar Momma and Bird from a Wire. Both have really well written blogs and beautiful artwork. And don't forget my BFF Sally. Well I could actually go on and on about blogs I love, but I'll have to save that for another day.....or rather other days.

Fun-filled times!

Life here has been filled with friends, creating, and decluttering. And it was a perfect amount of each (because you wouldn't want too much decluttering--it's a lot of work). I had a chance to get into my studio and create on my own and with friends, which was great fun. I have some new pieces in the works and a couple new ones in my shop.

I'm also excitedly getting ready for another guest post (Lucky me!). My good friend Sylvia of Baxter's Mom has asked me to talk more about my Word Art, so be sure to come visit on Wednesday to read more....

So today's the day! My very first guest post is up over at my best friend Sally's blog, Are They Twins? I'm so excited!

This is the same Sally I just introduced you to this past Who Do You Follow Thursday. We've known each other for what's now been a very long time (since junior high) and together we've been through a lot of life's ups and downs. Through it all, with her support and encouragement, Sally has helped bring out my best, both as a person and as an artist. In fact, some of my best artwork has been made for her.

I did some more playing last night and finished my piece from the other night. I love it! It's such a great representation of who I am. Just about everything I do comes from the heart. It was so much fun to just start painting the other night, not knowing where I was going, and then end up here. Hooray for playtime! This past Thursday my friend Leslie over at Words of Me Project (and Skinny Me, as if one blog wasn't enough to keep track of) started a linky party to share blogs that we love and follow, possibly blogs we've forgotten. What an awesome idea! There are so many great blogs out there, so much to share. I can't help but find tons of fun stuff when I start looking, hopping from blog to blog, hours flying by. So I've decided to join in the fun. Today the blog I'd like to share with you is my best friend Sally's blog, Are They Twins?

I'm sure you're thinking "Of course you love and follow this blog, she's your best friend." But I am sharing her blog with you because I know you'll love her, too.

Sally is a "mom, wife, teacher, compulsive movie-quoter, and lover of Diet Coke and Target." Sally had been neglecting her blog for a while due to the craziness of all of the above, but now she's back and I couldn't be more excited! Currently she's participating in the 21 Days to Getting Organized Challenge that I was trying to keep up with and she even wrote a guest post about cleaning. Now you're probably saying "cleaning? really?", but you should read her post, it's really quite clever and entertaining (it's almost got me inspired to do some cleaning and, honestly, cleaning isn't something we do much of here--we're more about organizing than cleaning). I thought I'd share a little bit of my favorite inspiration today. This is the display I have above the bed in our guest room/craft room. I recently added a few pieces this holiday season and I adore it! In fact, Rebecca commented that Grandma's room is the prettiest in the house (because when I say guest room, I really mean Grandma's room when she visits). I promise to share more of my crafting space. It is quite cluttered, but in a happy way. I just need to clear a bit of the excess clutter before I show you the whole room. But this is a peek.

It's time to get back up

We are almost officially one week into the new year! I am really enjoying my one little word, Clear, and all that it's been inspiring. I've been clearing out the clutter in my house like crazy. I haven't been able to keep up with A Bowl Full of Lemon's challenge like I had hoped but I certainly have been bitten by the organizing bug. I don't have photos to show, but you would have been amazed by the pile of clothes that Daniel and I cleared out of our closet and drawers. It felt so good to drop them off at Good Will this morning. I've been clearing out time for art and blogging and all things creative, and this makes me so happy. I still need to get going on my art journal, but I'll get there. I'm truly enjoying Ali Edwards' class and hope to have more to show for it in the next week or two. I've been good about buying less, which helps both in my goal to clear the clutter (bringing home less) and clear our debt (less money spent, more money for debt). So I am accomplishing a lot!

But I still need to get to work on my weight loss goal. It seems like this goal haunts me every year. So in an attempt to get myself up and going on this, I have joined the Biggest Loser Challenge at Green Tangerines (a local scrapbook store). I'm not sure what I'm hoping to gain from joining, but I thought it was time to do something different. In the past I've been quiet about my weight loss goals, even with close friends and family, and so far that hasn't worked. So here I am announcing to all that I need to lose weight and I plan to make 2011 the year that I actually do it! I'm going to clear out bad habits and my excess weight! Feel free to join me!

Slow and steady

So here we are, fourth day of the year and the excitement of a fresh, clean start is already being replaced by the mental clutter of all I want to accomplish in this new year. But I need to remember slow and steady wins the race, right? Ali Edwards offered this gentle reminder to all of her One Little Word students over at BPS. Have I mentioned I am taking this class? I know, I know...what am I thinking? I am supposed to be clearing stuff off my list, not adding more, right? Well I am so happy I decided to add this class to my To Do list. The class spans the entire year, at the end of which we'll have an album celebrating our word and the journey it takes us on. So far the class content and projects are simple, doable, and inspiring. And I love seeing all the other students' words and pages. It just feels good to get to know my word, embrace it's meaning, and be inspired to make art again (the holidays really stole me away from making art). Now I haven't completed anything from class just yet, but yesterday I was inspired to make a little art piece to celebrate my word.

Now I am still doing my best to keep up with the organizing challenge, too. But it is truly becoming a challenge, and it's only Day #3. Day #3 is the kitchen cabinet with all our tupperware--which I seem to organize over and over, but it still stays a mess. I'll have to see what I can get done today when I get home. Every little bit helps, right? Slow and steady!

A detour

In my attempt to clear out household clutter (which is going really well), I seem to have added quite a bit of clutter to my To Do list. I have such trouble gauging what I can truly get done in a day. Which means I never complete my daily To Do list. Part of this may be the unexpected interruptions of life, or the detours. For instance, this afternoon we visited my husband Daniel's work, so that Rebecca and Katherine could see their very own epithelial cells through a microscope (Daniel teaches Anatomy & Physiology at a local college and this really intrigues Rebecca).

Now that wasn't on my To Do list when the day began, but it was an amazing experience to witness between father and daughters. And I did get a lot done today: laundry, taking the girls to their dance classes, making a bit of art (which I'll share soon), a little bit of organizing (Day #2 Challenge was to clean my desk which I already did this past weekend, so I continued to organize a bit deeper), etc.. We even went to the bookstore for a calendar for Daniel's office after dinner (also unplanned). I'm proud to say even with the additional detour, we had dinner at home even though it would have been so much easier to eat out after going to the lab (we were good in saving money and being healthier--big steps). I was also good at the bookstore and didn't buy myself a single thing, no magazine, no clearance book, nothing (I realize that to conquer the clutter I need to get rid of stuff rather than bring more stuff home--this is huge for me). So I really need to celebrate all that I accomplished today rather than focusing on all that remains unfinished (like Zumba and a little extra sleep). I will find the right balance...... someday.

P.S. I'd share photos of my desk organization for Day #2, but my desk is still far from perfect (I have a lot of stuff) and the photos are not nearly as cool as today's detour. We'll see how tomorrow goes. Tomorrow I go to work.....time for a bit of that time management I'm not so good at.

Clearing out household clutter

I have been inspired to jump into 2011 and clear out the clutter in our home. And this weekend has been amazing! Both my husband and I have been purging stuff left and right. Now we're no where near done, but we have been forced to slow down because our trash cans are overflowing. One of the many things I did was tackle the worst "junk" drawer in our house, my makeup drawer. This was the first assignment in A Bowl Full of Lemon's 21 Days to Getting Organized Challenge.

I learned about the challenge from my BFF and thought it would be a good jump start to clearing out clutter (well honestly, at first I thought 21 days was way too aggressive for my house, but then I decided I should at least give it a try). I have to say I am surprised at how much junk was in the drawer, how quickly the drawer was reorganized (just over 30 minutes) and how good it felt. Stay tuned to see if I can keep up......

I hope everyone enjoyed a safe and happy new year's eve. Now it's time for the fresh start of a new year. I have lots of goals for 2011, many of which look remarkably similar to years past. But this year I believe I have found one little word to help, a concept to help bring my goals together.........

My one little word for 2011 is clear. I wasn't sure about it at first, but the more I thought and the more I explored, it fits perfectly. I plan on clearing clutter (both mental and material), debt (or at least work towards that), and excess weight (Zumba Wii here I come). I hope to gain focus and clarity in my mind as I clear out the excess. And I hope to clear the path to success this year (maybe then 2012's list of goals can be new and different). I am currently working on more concrete goals and breaking them down into bite size pieces. I'll make sure to share as I go along. What's your word and/or goals for 2011?

And if anyone is interested in a reminder of their word make sure to visit my shop. I started making my words for this very reason. In 2009 my word was Create and create I did! I love doing custom pieces and I am planning on adding kits for those do-it-yourselfers, so stay tuned! And check it out, I was included in an etsy treasury celebrating the new year. Clearly a good sign!

Counting my blessings

I hope everyone has been enjoying their holidays. I have certainly been enjoying the season. You might have even noticed I took a little vacation from the computer (not planned, just happened). It's been crazy at times, but fun nonetheless. On several occasions, our family enjoyed visiting Santa and different Christmas light displays. We watched Rebecca and Katherine dance in the Littlest Nutcracker. On numerous occasions, we snuggled up to Christmas classics like White Christmas, Rudolph, Frosty the Snowman, and A Christmas Story. We read countless Christmas themed books, including The Night Before Christmas. I've listened to nonstop Christmas music since Thanksgiving (okay maybe a little bit earlier than that). My husband and I celebrated our 11th wedding anniversary (and even took our girls to visit the B&B where we were married). We baked Sherry cakes and countless cookies, with much of my cookie inspiration coming from Pioneer Woman. We made graham cracker houses. We joined the crowds and shopped for gifts and made a few as well (including Rebecca's hand-sewn scarf for Santa--see the adorable tree). We mailed and received many Christmas cards. We made snowflakes with paper and scissors. I participated in both a cookie exchange and a Secret Santa exchange. We had a secret Santa adventure with horses and carriage rides. We gave and received many wonderful gifts. In fact we witnessed magic as Rebecca received a precious purple dolphin keychain from Santa that she had recently lost. And we enjoyed lots of time with loved ones. We have been truly blessed this holiday season. Happy Holidays!

Wow! I can't believe how fast the holiday season is flying by. I have/had so many plans yet there seems to be such little time. A common theme in life, especially mine (too many ideas, too little time). Unfortunately I also lost a few days because of Strep throat. I did take advantage of the down time to watch Christmas movies (White Christmas, The Santa Clause trilogy, etc..), so holiday cheer still ensued as I recovered. And I am feeling much better now. So today I plan on enjoying some holiday baking and crafting. And a cookie exchange tomorrow night! Bring on the holidays...

A real horse?

The Christmas season is in full swing and Wow! it does get busy, doesn't it? I can't believe the last time I posted here was Saturday. It feels like that was just a day or two ago, but really it's almost an entire week. We've been busy decorating for Christmas and trying to keep up with the everyday stuff like work and school and meals and laundry, etc.. You get the idea.

Earlier this week we went to the mall to visit Santa. For the past two years, our Santa pictures have been a family photo because that's the only way Katherine would get near the man in red (see here and here). Well this year was different. As we were talking Rebecca into going up to Santa and telling her she needed to be brave for her sister (because Rebecca all of a sudden decided she was shy), we turned to see Katherine basically take a running leap into Santa's lap. It was the sweetest thing. She then made sure to tell him her wish--she wants pink cowgirl boots like big sis and......A real horse. I'm afraid our house, like many, isn't made for a real horse. So I hope that whatever Santa comes up with doesn't disappoint.

Follow your dreams

So the Christmas season is officially in full swing at our house. I can now openly listen to my Christmas music, watch my Christmas movies, enjoy my Christmas decorations, and be Merry! Hooray! This weekend my family and I spent a majority of our time decorating, yet we still have more to finish up. I'll be sure to share pictures. Now we did take a break for a trip to the movies to see Tangled and it was agreed, the movies was absolutely adorable!!! I just love Disney! I can get the same warm, fuzzy feeling from a good Disney movie that I get from the Christmas season. And Tangled was no exception--I laughed, I cried, I had a great time. The animation was gorgeous, the music was beautiful and the story was sweet. There was a lot of talk about the importance of following your dreams. Now you can't argue with that, can you?

Small Biz Saturday

Happy Thanksgiving!

Not only am I celebrating Thanksgiving with my family, but I am also celebrating 100 blog posts here at By Jen with you!

I noticed that I was getting closer to 100 posts a few weeks ago, so I thought I should do something fun to celebrate. After much thought, I decided it would be fun to put together a list of 100 things that inspire me and make me happy as I travel along my creative path. Seems like a good idea, right? Well not only is my 100th post later than I first calculated, I also procrastinated in putting together my list. So here I am, Thanksgiving Eve and I have a list of 18 and I need to get some sleep. I had better start planning my celebration for 200 (as if a procrastinator at heart can really plan ahead). Last night was our monthly craft night and we made these adorable little holiday decorations with instruction from Paula. It ended up being a small group because of the holiday (me, Tina, Paula, and Paula's mom), but that just meant we got to make more projects. Can you believe these are made with brown paper bags? Too cute!!!

Can you believe it? Thanksgiving is just days away and Christmas is right around the corner. I must admit I have skipped over Thanksgiving a bit, but I just can't help it. Christmas is such a magical time of year. There's the music and movies, making gifts and treats, the lights and decorations, time spent with family and friends, etc.. It's also that time to be thinking of Christmas cards. I haven't quite figured out this year's design, but I do know that I hope to incorporate photos of my precious girls in two different Christmas dresses (it was just too hard to choose one) and maybe some with Sprinkles, too. And on top of that tall order, it's going to be tough to top last year's card. I captured the perfect Christmas photo by shear luck and, using Shutterfly, I made a simple but elegant card. The card was perfect and it's hard to top perfect. But I'm sure with Shutterfly by my side, as well as the cutest subjects ever, I have a good shot. Shutterfly has some adorable Christmas card ideas and I just adore their photo books as gifts, too. It may be Thanksgiving next week, but soon after we'll all be needing to get our Christmas cards going. But I was pleasantly surprised as I witnessed the joy on her face. She grinned from ear to ear the whole time. And she was able to do everything the "big" girls did. It was magical to see her fully embrace the experience. It made me appreciate all the experiences we have been able to offer the girls. Life is to be experienced, right? So here's to embracing life and all it has to offer!

Creative Bloom

This past weekend I was excited to receive my pre-ordered copy of Creative Bloom by Jen Swift, a fellow Kelly Rae Robert's flyer. I've truly enjoyed all the artists and blogs I have found by way of Kelly Rae Robert's past e-course. Sometimes it's hard to explain why we gravitate towards one blog or artist, but Jen was one of them. Her blog is well written (and updated regularly--something I'd like to be better about), her wire art was something new (and I seem to collect hobbies), and it was just really fun to see someone "real" in the final stages of getting a book published (I just LOVE craft books). She's been a great inspiration. Her success makes me feel as if I can dream big, too. So I knew I wanted to get her book when it came out, if anything just to be supportive of a fellow flyer. So I snatched up one of her pre-order packages and I'm so glad I did. The package arrived beautifully wrapped with precious wire art gifts and her book. I have found the book to be wonderfully inspiring, both in it's words and projects. The flower pictured here is my attempt at her first project. It turned out pretty neat. So thank you to Jen for your creative inspiration!

So this weekend was crazy! Crazy fun and just plain crazy. Rebecca's Build-A-Bear birthday was a great success. The kids had a blast, as well as the parents and grandparents. We had a great time Trick-Or-Treating. It was really fun to see the neighborhood so festive and so many trick-or-treaters. Unfortunately, we all ended up with a cold by Monday afternoon, so the girls and I stayed home to rest yesterday. I think I might have got more rest had I gone to work. You gotta love all the energy of a 3 and 6 year old, even when they're under the weather.

So in my time at home, I stumbled upon Scrapbook Expo's Creativity Showcase and I have to enter! They are looking for creative uses of scrapbooking supplies and I think my words would be perfect. Trouble is I can only enter two of my pieces and I am having a tough time deciding. Any suggestions?

Today is Halloween. And as you may already know, Halloween is pretty special around my house. Just six short years ago my first baby was born, Rebecca. So today not only do we get the fun of celebrating Halloween, but we also get to celebrate Rebecca's birthday. So Happy Halloween to All! And Happy Birthday to my Becca!

A Snow Storm of Happy

Yesterday was a crazy day. Yet it was filled with lots of happy energy. At times I was reminded of the snowball effect where things build on each other, but the more I thought about it, it really wasn't one big snowball building up in size but rather a lot of little ones. So forgive me as I shower you with some of my happy snowflakes.

It started with the realization that Rebecca's pumpkin patch birthday party this coming weekend was going to be rained out. So I spent the morning calling around to find a Plan B. I know we could have switched to a party at home, but each time I throw one at home I am exhausted afterwards. So I did find a Plan B that made everyone happy: Build-A-Bear in the mall. Rebecca adores Build-A-Bear right now, so I am excited! There's one happy snowflake.

I also learned that a blog friend of mine, Leslie at Words of Me Project, chose to honor my blog with her Blog of the Week. I just love reading Leslie's blog. A lot of times when I read her blog its as if she's in my head, yet she can express it so much easier than I can. She's a talented writer and I am very honored that she chose my blog. There's happy snowflake #2 (I feel a bit like the Count from Sesame Street).

Leslie's blog also linked up to a contest to win the book Creative Bloom written by Jennifer Swift at Bird from a Wire, another blog friend of mine. I am so excited for Jen. I love reading her blog and can't wait for her book to come out. I've already pre-ordered it through her site but I still had to enter the contest, because how much fun would it be to share one here on my blog. So there's happy snowflake #3.

I had an acquaintance on facebook leave a message for me complimenting my art. Snowflake #4. And some moms at Katherine's dance class have shown some interest in my art at Polka Dots. Snowflake #5. Even today there's been some happiness spill over: I found out that Peculiar Momma, another blog friend, is giving away the book Witch Craft on her blog. She contributed an adorable snow globe project to the book that I even tried with the girls a few weeks ago. Snowflake #6.

I could go on and on, but you get the idea. There was lots of happiness and inspiration swirling around. And like I said it wasn't really a snowball, but rather a gentle little snow storm of happy. Let it snow!
